I work full-time remote from and my office is located on the other side of the country. I started in 2020 and was onboarded remotely due to COVID. After the pandemic began to taper, they started making it a requirement for all employees to come in the office 1-2x a week. Because of an unexpected family tragedy, my father passed away very suddenly, I was able to convince them to let me continue working remotely due to caretaking of other members of my family. However, every year, I have to fly out and stay for two weeks to help facilitate a conference (aka hang signs on doors, print things, help figure out computer issues if someone can't figure it out, be everyone's “fetch-it” person, etc.). I am required to pay for my own flights, accommodations, transportation, food, etc. – all of it, out-of-pocket per the flex work agreement. I have spent 3.5 years in the position and there was a period of nearly 1 year where I was doing two positions for the salary of one while we continued to hire and look for someone. I am getting my graduate degree for basically free through this position. As I work “behind-the-scenes”, doing my job remotely, I feel that no one really appreciates what I do or how hard I've worked for this place. I am so fed up but feel so torn because I know how hard it is to get a remote job that pays decent and has decent benefits. What should I do? I love having a remote job and as I am a first-gen, I feel so lucky to be getting my graduate degree for nearly free. I asked for help to get my accommodations covered this year and they offered to let me stay at a coworkers home or pay for a room in an airbnb but nothing else. Any advice?
