I´m (27F) a 2022 graduate from one of the best universities in the world rankings, where I graduated top of my class. I studied an international bachelor´s, lived in many countries, and did internships in top companies. Currently I am stuck in a city that I hate, working my first “real life” job for Amazon. My job is great and I really like the skills that I am learning, but I work too much overtime. This, combined with the fact that there is nothing to do in the city (stores and restaurants close early, there´s overall not a lot of going on in the city) is affecting my mental health and I feel that I´m missing out. Reading a post here today reminded me of a memory from long ago, maybe 1991. I worked for a total d-bag who had a small computer consulting company. I provided support and custom programming for a new generation of high powered workstations — of which, the company had exactly one, because they cost like 20 grand a pop. As his customers started buying these machines that would need support, the boss wanted to hire a second guy to be alongside me. They interviewed a few guys for the position. I overheard the boss tell one of them, and I still remember the exact words, “We'll get you on the machine at thirteen bucks an hour,” to which the guy happily agreed because that was a pretty good wage back in 1991. I live in Ontario. My father has mouth cancer that is ulcerating through the skin. His entire chin is an open wound. There was bone in his dressing. He has maybe months to live, if that. Needless to say, the emotional and mental toll this has taken on me has been massive. I work five days a week, nine hours a day as a receptionist in an office. I have two other coworkers aside from my manager, one works part time, so the admin department is essentially 3 and a half people. So a while ago I made a post about being “promoted” to a harder position without receiving more pay. I like the work, but it is certainly much more work. After all but singlehandedly fixing my department (and by extension a lot of other areas) I sat down with one of my managers and asked about a raise. He's not the GM but his word is taken seriously, and for a manager, is super receptive to listening and advocating for his employees. We compared my position to what other companies pay for similar work. He said he's gonna try to get me anywhere between a $4-$5 dollar raise. That is really significant for me. My colleagues are terrible when it comes to reading and absorbing information in emails. I feel the standard of response is inappropriate and unprofessional.
