I believe that corperate workers deserve to be treated better and to be compensated much more equitably. But I have a feeling I just can't shake. I saw a post on Instagram which showed two people in their early 20s talking about how they wanted to quit their corporate jobs after only 6months. What follows is the rant I wanted to post in response.
The average salary for a corporate job as of may 2023 pays $65,000/year, the average retail worker makes about half that amount.
Listen, I fully sympathize with not liking your job OR finding it challenging to stay motivated OR just feeling like you're not making a difference. But tell me…Do you get vacation days? What about a predictable work schedule? Can you attend events and family gatherings in the middle of the day on a Sunday? Does the company you work for have resources allocated to something playfully referred to as the “fun commity?”
I get that corporate jobs suck and it is true that we are ALL victims of a system which actively works against us but I GUARANTEE you have it better than every retail worker, every assembly line worker, every food service worker, every public services worker (Fire,EMS) every meat packer, Uber/cab/delivery/long haul driver.
Ask any gas station attendant in the WORLD if they would trade places with you and the answer would be yes.
Take 10 seconds and consider how lucky you are to have a mediocre job that pays. Meanwhile the world is supported by people making minimum wage just to survive. I'm not saying your job isn't hard, I'm saying a lot of people work harder and make MUCH less.
I am open to discussion and thoughts from folks here. My intention is not to invalidate anyone's concerns about the work they do or the compensation they might have(or not have.) I think I've been clear that I care about all workers even if I am happy to acknowledge that some have it better than others.
