Not for me, but for my mom. My mom starting working at this small start-up not that long ago (maybe a year or two at most) and she was just recently laid off–along with 16 others from the company including her boss. This comes after the CEO of the company spent the last year hiring her best friends, her sister, and her friends husband all at 100k plus each. Talk about nepotism huh? These people treated her like crap. She worked in the finance services section of her job but they had her cleaning up after everyone like a janitor, closing every single day, and washing their dishes. I hated these people and how they treated her. I can't believe there are people like this in the world… then again, I guess I can. People are horrible, and this woman should not be running a business. That's my rant, I…
This year I got a pretty good promotion at work and I now make a decent salary. I was born in Brooklyn, NY but raised in the Bronx, where the African American community is almost completely in shambles in terms of employment options (Average individual income as of 2019 was $20,000, criminally low especially with the expensive NY rents). I grew up in a rough area and it's heartbreaking to see the kids from high school who were hard workers, intelligent and strong willed be so stagnant in their careers. Most earning maybe just a little above minimum wage, living in apartments with a bunch of roommates, or living generations in the housing projects. All working back breaking and demeaning jobs in the service industry. To everyone else I know that they're just some racist stereotype but I know that these people aren't lazy, stupid, criminals and it bothers me…
I made sure to ask how often we’d be coming in, if it would get more frequent or less frequent, etc. I told them I have a puppy and a terrible commute, they said they understood, would be all good. Since we have flexible hours even for in person days I come around 7 and leave around 1. I take my lunch when I leave, and usually still end up doing some stuff from home later in the day. Was just told by my supervisor that my boss doesn’t like that, and says it looks bad as everyone else stays to around 4…. (that’s cause everyone else arrives around 10/11) I told my supervisor I don’t understand why that’s an issue… we have FLEXIBLE hours. It’s not my fault my boss comes in at 11? Anyways… he told me it’s all about perception and asked me to come in for…
I got headhunted for a new job. During the interview, I said I really need flexibility because I care for disabled family members. They promised that would be totally fine. I’ve been there a month and I’ve already had shit for asking for time off for medical appointments and giving over a weeks notice for leaving an hour early and starting an hour early on one day, the boss came across as demanding and rude on a few occasions… basically, it’s just not a good fit for me personally. How long do I give it to see if anything changes?
Thinking about quitting today
As the title says I'm thinking about quitting my job today. I wanted to quit back in January but stuck it out to see if my situation (work/mental) improved. It hasn't tbh. I've got some other offers lined up but i haven't accepted any of them yet. Just want to quit today to get it done. I've only quit one other job before so I'm not sure what's the best way to do it.
I was recently forced to take an interim position at a very well known and respected museum. However during the interview I had asked if the position I'd be the interim for was for someone on leave or something and they said no, they just wanted to make this new position (and maybe test it out I guess?). Now that I'm aboard there are like 5 other new interim employees in different departments (I'm Administrative). What's the deal with that? Feels pretty scammy to me, however my workload is quite minimal. I was looking for permanent but wasn't getting any offers because the museum industry isn't in a hiring boom right now so there isn't a lot available, and my bills were accumulating fast, hence the “forced” to accept because doing this position buys me more time to keep searching. Another thing to note are that they refused to negotiate…
To further clarify the situation, my girlfriend was told by her doctor not to work for a couple of weeks (8 weeks) to reduce stress for her and our baby. She was told she had a low chance of having children in the first place. She works at a upscale restaurant and came back to and was told by the new boss “I’m sorry but we had to replace your spot with someone who was able to work and is more reliable” this boss is very anti children and has no kids of his own. Before he became boss (he got a promotion cause the Original boss left) he essentially critiqued her for having kids and said it was bad for her career. The chef industry is very male Dominated and I feel like this is wrong and is discrimination. She basically forced to apply for a new job while…
