Always get it in writing

I work in a Canadian school – compared to most people at least in North America, we have a good salary and great benefits. Not to mention a fairly strong union. I am the union rep at my school. Recently, a coworker of mine came to ask me about bereavement leave. Our CBA allows a decent number of days, but most of them have to be taken immediately. They wanted them moved later, to take care of things instead of grieving – they expected the death. Fair to ask, even though the CBA doesn't permit it – you never know. So I suggested they talk with admin, but not to expect anything. They come back to me, happily telling me the VP has agreed to move the bereavement days off. Rite Aid on confronting shoplifters: Your fears are not worth us losing merchandise

My friend works at Rite Aid, and the manager noticed someone beeped while walking out the door after she checked them out. He got angry and told my friend she needs to confront the person and ask to scan /check their items again. She said she isn't comfortable chasing them down because it's unsafe, and he said “Your fears are not worth us losing merchandise. ” My friend took tests during her training to work there, and the trainings said to not even talk to shoplifters, because safety is more important. They said to call a manager. This manager doesn't want to hire loss prevention/security. Instead he expects his employees, making $15/hour (in one of the most expensive areas in the US) to risk their safety confronting shoplifters. She is planning to quit soon. Is it better for her to continue refusing to stop shoplifters and see if they fire…

Tip one. My schedule before I was “let go”. They got me before I could leave on my own terms being taken advantage of. Anyway if you start getting scheduled like this please start looking somewhere else. They are taking advantage of you and don’t care if they work you to death.
