I am sitting here, with two laptops open reading all the ‘buzz words’ and ‘key internal value phrases’ so that I can tick an imaginary box to tell a group of strangers whether I am competent enough in how I work with others to take on this job, as well as completely brainwashed into their ‘organisation ethos’. I have, seriously, had HR meetings where they have shown mr colour charts of urine to remind me to drink water. As opposed to paying me, they are educating me and almost usurping the role of the caregiver. I am sitting here a nervous wreck because of the synthetic pressure I put on myself to deliver, not only for myself but for my family and to be honest with the way wages are going, I can’t afford to not get this. One key insight I’ve had throughout the build up and the process…
Do gaps in employment really matter?
I want to leave my job. I want a break. I don't just want to walk straight into another job, I want a couple of months away. I've been in my current job for 9 years. If I leave my job and don't start looking for another job until a few months later, is that gap in employment going to become an issue? How do you explain that to potential employers?
Frustrated
At this point I no longer work for a living, not even sure i ever did. I work now so I can afford to die. So tired.
I'm a current 3rd year computer engineering student. I am currently looking for internships (my university mandates at least 2 summer internships before we graduate). I made the mistake of applying to many different internships for companies without googling them beforehand. Then, out of nowhere, a company “Talent Acquisition Specialist” starts spamming me with phone calls non-stop (does not even email me first), with phone calls during my classes and my part-time work (don't like it but better experience than 90% of my previous employments and with an “acceptable pay”) and my project with the university. At first I panicked because I never normally answer to unknown phone calls, but when I answer, the most rude individual I have ever dealt with starts shouting at me for: 1) Not responding to her phone calls (even AFTER telling her I was at class) 2) Not responding to her email (SHE NEVER…
My Work Just Fired Me.
I (M17) work in a Factory, and today I left at 8:00AM after I was sick, I was told if we were ever sick don’t ask for permission to leave or clock out, just grab your things and leave. I did exactly that. My phone was dead, so I plugged it into my Power Bank as soon as left. I got a message asking why I left as soon as my phone turned on, right when I was about to message them. I explained that I was sick and was told to leave immediately. Now I get a message saying I am forbidden to work there and i’m fired… Bullshit.
Just had a random memory from a ridiculous job I had for an entire 3 days at an acupuncture clinic about 10 years ago. When someone made a mistake, any mistake, they had to write it in a journal. I thought it was the dumbest thing. The owner also had a video camera watching the receptionist (me) and he told me to smile more often. They fired me after 3 days because I needed to leave early to go do my community service which they already knew I was doing and the reason why. They put me alone the 2nd day I was working there and I had to check in people, schedule them when their session was done, restock the acupuncture room (it was huge and multiple people got their sessions at the same time), answer phones, and get people their herb prescriptions. Nobody was in the waiting room…
They fired me. So I quit. Kinda….
Long story short, I was growing rather agitated from the gaslighting and humiliation I faced on an increasingly frequent basis. So naturally, I decided to draft a resignation notice and carry it around in my backpack in case they decided to pull something. At this point, I didn't care about any of the bureaucratic repercussions of quitting vs getting fired. It was about self-respect and salvaging what's left of my sanity. well. I was handed my “notice of separation” an hour after I printed the damn thing. I'm not encouraging anyone else to do this as my situation is unique to me, but I'd still like to share a rough draft of what In threw in my boss's face. keep in mind, by that point, all of the paperwork pertaining to my termination has already been processed. Technically, I was fired before I even entered the building. (Let me know…
