My wife and I recently moved from the midwest to NY. We decided we would prioritize her career for location since I can work remotely. Through a recruiter she took a job at a high end jewelry store that she felt advanced her goals and would offer her the support she needed to finish her gemology degree. They flew her out for an on site working interview and made a big show of being excited to have her. One month later after starting her boss calls her in and fires her with no warning. From the looks of things they are firing all recent hires due to the company doing poorly and making excuses about performance. I've just found out she apparently never got a formal employment contract them.
Are there any general protections in NY state for situations like this or are we totally screwed as is the grand tradition of our great nation? Is she still entitled to unemployment? We signed a year lease and incurred significant damages to move here due to a horrendous moving company.
They reasonably had full knowledge they could not safely afford new employees due to slow business but were hiring anyway. The main boss was away on medical leave during this process and then immediately started firing people as soon as he got back.
