So I work in an open plan office where I am expected to remain in the same chair all day. My boss sits about 1.5 metres to my right, perpendicular to me, and there is absolutely no privacy.
The company says that I am not allowed to leave my desk for more than ten minutes and they used to keep all the blinds closed so no natural light got in. It was only after I persistently complained about this that they started opening one or two sets of blinds slightly to let in a bit of sunshine from outside.
The lighting in the office is artificial strip lights, rows of them all along the ceiling. The light from these long bulbs fills the parts of your field of vision not taken up by a computer screen. You are not allowed to look at your cell phone during work hours.
Basic work hours are 8AM until 6PM, with a one hour break for lunch, so that's eight hours a day in these conditions, chained to a desk, in full view of your boss, with only toilet breaks to get away. I try to schedule meetings and Zoom calls in other rooms to get away but this is quite hard to do.
I don't know what I am trying to say, or what point I am trying to make, except that I instinctively feel like these kinds of work conditions just shouldn't exist. Humans surely needs more privacy, variety and natural light than this. I am just venting now, but does anyone else work in conditions like these? I can't be alone in thinking this sucks an unreasonable amount.
