Does a paid fellowship violate a non-compete?

I work for an Asian American rights organization. My boss is pretty abusive and I have been seeking a way out and found a fellowship that supports original ideas to better your community. It is being offered by another Asian American Rights Group (Not sure if it is important to mention that their CEO hates my boss and vice versa [again, my boss is industry-known for being awful, but has powerful connections). My current job has a non-compete with employment: “During the term of employment with —– and for twelve (12) months following the termination of employment, employees are prohibited from engaging in or assisting any business, organization, or activity that competes with the programs, services, or initiatives offered by —-“. But since this is an open fellowship over two years and not the same as employment, I wondered if it counted or if it fell under 'assisting any organization'.…

For what it is worth, my entire background has always been in supporting Asian American causes (as I am asian) so not working in that industry would be fairly difficult.
