Tech company woes

I do some lower level technical support type of work which largely consists of database research and customer outreach. It's a fine job, sorta… But I'm curious others experience with work hours, and more importantly 'on call' hours in tech roles? See my gig is 8-5. But then I'm also expected to pay attention to my work phone/PC/email/team messages in case any issues arise until about 8pm at night. Effectively, I have to pay attention 12 hours a day. I get paid for 8. I do get overtime if I have to log on, but I don't get paid to be on call, which is my issue. Moreover, I'm supposed to respond to these after hours issues within 10 minutes. It's debilitatingly limiting. I feel like I can't go jog, grocery shop, do laundry, hangout with people… Not without having my work phone and laptop by me. Basically need to…

Looking for my first job – tips on how to choose right

I've started looking for a job, starting next semester. I am a part time student living in South America, so ideally I'm looking for a WFH internship in the full stack developer/software engineer area. I know it's basically impossible to get an international remote internship but I've been looking for opportunities both in and out of my country. I was wondering what red flags I should look for, how to behave in an interview and at what part of the selection process I should start asking about the pay (99% of the job postings don't have a salary range, and since it's my first job I feel it would turn companies away if I started asking about money upfront). Please, if you have any tips on how to choose and apply to a company, let me know! (inflation has hit hard and it has become increasingly difficult for my parent…

Early prep for a possible departure

I started a new position at the beginning of this year. I work for an IT department that supports a large plant that makes household products. I think the team is great and I like everyone. A colleague of mine, that has been around for about 7 months ,asked our manager for a possible raise due to expecting his first child and wanting to make at least the same as the rest of us. He’s at 18 an hour we are at 19. Long story short , manager did not provide the raise , colleague asked if it was possible to get a raise on his year anniversary , manager said more than likely no. Pretty fucking lame. On top of that , he told my colleague that we should not be discussing our wage and that we could be disciplined for doing so. So yeah , I’ve been here…

Wasting everyone’s time

Saw a thing on Twitter, and it reminded me of a time when I wasted an entire day applying to the cable company Spectrum for a CSR position. TL;DR Job posting didn't include a link to the required online application or say that a Saturday or Sunday shift would be required, which I couldn't do because of the bus schedule. I tell them I wasted an entire day because of their poor job listing. I don't drive, so my job search is hampered by the bus lines. Thankfully, I live in an area with a robust public transit. I saw a posting on Craigslist for Spectrum intending to hire a bunch of CSRs. It said to bring copies of your résumé between 9 AM & 9 PM on that day and they would be holding interviews. I checked the bus route on Google, saw it was feasible to get their…

Screw the New Guy to Cover my Raise

My wife and I both work for a big name company. I have worked there for a few years. She just reached year 1. She was excited to get paid out for her accrued PTO until she was just told that any employee who started in 2021 will not be able to receive PTO until 2023, and it will not accrue between 2021 and 2022. I am fairly certain this was not presented to her when she signed up, and I know for a fact it was never said to me when I signed on (and never before have they made anyone work a year before even beginning accruement). We have been fighting them on and off ever since she started due to basic disability accommodations. I'm tired boss…is this legal? Can we fight this? How? I am 99% sure this is how they covered giving a bunch of us…

should I jumpship?

My job seems like it going down hill fast, we're down to one foreman a journeyman and one other Apprentice. We have work just can't keep people with all the travel we do, my foreman and the other Apprentice are talking about leaving and I have a couple job opportunities lined up that pay more not counting the per diam and is in town too. I'm just not sure what to do but I want some opinions

Employers need to provide essential materials, no exceptions.

My girlfriend had an interview today with a high profile tv based shopping channel for just customer service and phone order taking. She called me directly after the interview excited that she got the job offer. She then told me the requirements for the job. For $15 an hour (which is god awful in the state of Florida) you have to work the worst schedule possible, provide your own computer, have a business landline installed and buy a headset. What kind of company in 2022 is so archaic that they dont have a secure internet softphone system? It is nearly impossible to get a landline in our area, let alone a business one. In a job market like this companies are beyond out of touch. If you want employees, YOU have to provide the essential working materials. It is not the candidates responsibility. Tell your grandma to stop buying from…

My friends and I have been looking to switch jobs because of lackluster raises and we’re starting to get a little fed up with potential employers wasting our time. We decided to make a little comedy sketch about our experience.
